In his original poem, Sanekata uses the term toyo no akari 豊の明り, which literally means ‘an abundance of light’, and was used to refer to imperial drinking parties. The commentators agree that the ‘light’ in the expression refers to the flush appearing on people’s faces when drunk, hence my translation.
