Dolls

A reference to the dolls of the Hina Matsuri 雛祭り ‘Girls’Festival’on the 3rd Day of the Third Month. On this day, houses are decorated with displays of special dolls, dressed in the clothing of the ancient imperial court and offerings are made to them to pray for good fortune and long-life for the daughters of the house.

In the poem, Bashō remarks that even his own home, the ‘hut’ of a celibate poet, is decorated with dolls this year, as his guests have daughters.
