Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine

Iwashimizu Hachiman Shrine 岩清水八幡宮 was located to the south of the capital and was established in 859. At the time of this poem’s writing it had close connections with the court and often received noble patronage; from the end of the eleventh century, however, it came to be seen as the patron shrine of the warrior Minamoto clan and began to receive the support of the samurai class. The shrine festival referred to here took place at the beginning of the Third Month
