Muro no Yashima

Muro-no-Yashima 室の八島 was the name given to eight islets in a lake where Ōmiwa Shrine 大神神社 was situated. The shrine can still be found in Tochigi City 栃木市 in the south of modern Tochigi 栃木 Prefecture. The site was famous for the mists which rose from the lake and is frequently associated in poetry with the rising passions of love, and the image of smoke, as in this poem.
