Star anise

The translation of this poem is a little loose, as in the original Mahito makes a link between the name of the plant sikimi and the adverb sikusiku, which means ‘again and again’. So a more literal translation would be:

okuyama no
sikimi no pana no
na no goto ya
sikusiku kimi ni
kopiwatarinamu
In Okuyama
The star anise blooms, and
As its name suggests
Time and time again will you
Be in my thoughts
