Suwe no Matu

Sagami is combining two makura kotoba here: suwe no matu (yama) ‘the pine-(covered) mountain of Suwe’ was used to refer to Michinoku Province (in the north of Honshū), while iki no matubara ‘living pine groves’ referred to Chikuzen Province in the north of Kyūshū. Higo Province, where Yorikiyo was taking up his new post, was to the south of Chikuzen.
