Sanekata Shū 166

When Retired Emperor Kazan paid a visit to Kumano, I accompanied him as far as the province of Tsu and one evening, on seeing many fisher-folk on the shoreline:

夕なぎに磯菜刈りにと急ぎつるあまのあまたも見ゆるうらかな

yuFunagi ni
isona kari ni to
isogituru
ama no amata mo
miyuru ura kana
In the calm before the evening’s sea-breeze,
Gathering seaweed,
Flurry
A school of fisher-folk:
Plain to see upon this shore…

SKS X: 356

Composed when thinking that the world was a fleeting place.

かくしつゝ今はとならむ時にこそ悔しき事のかひもなからめ

kakusitutu
ima Fa to naramu
toki ni koso
kuyasiki koto no
kaFi mo nakarame
Going on like this –
Thinking that the end is nigh;
At such times
Repenting is
Quite pointless.
