A number of different locations have been posited for sakurai no sato 櫻井の里, which I have translated here as ‘Cherry Well Estate’, but there is, as yet, no consensus on where it actually was. It is most commonly used in poems with a spring theme, so Sanekata’s use of it in an autumn poem is somewhat unusual.
