When a woman I loved asked, on seeing dew upon the plantings before the Night Attendants’ Offices when I was leaving the Palace, ‘Why didn’t you see it with me?

起きてみば袖のみぬれていたづらに草葉の玉の數やまさらむ

okite miba
sode nomi nurete
itadura ni
kusaba no tama no
kazu ya masaramu
Had I arisen and gazed,
Soaked, indeed would be my sleeves;
Would there be a point in
The gemlets upon the leaves
Increasing, by so much, their numbers?
