GYS IX: 1250

When the Ise Virgin Junior Consort had yet to leave, he attached this to some cherry blossom and sent it to her.

吹く風の音にききつつさくら花めには見えずも過ぐる春かな

fuku kaze no

sakurabana
me ni wa miezu mo
suguru haru kana
In the gusting wind’s
Whispers will I ever hear
My cherry blossom, though
My eyes behold her not
As spring passes by…

Composed by the Tenryaku Emperor

GYS IX: 1249

On the same conception, when the Lay Priest and Former Chancellor had ten poem sequences composed at his residence.

いまよりの涙のはてよいかならん恋ひそむるだに袖はぬれけり

ima yori no
namida no hateyo

koisomuru dani
sode wa nurekeri
From this moment
Cease, my tears!
What has occurred?
Why, love’s first tint is all
That wets my sleeves.

But once a year
A meeting may have, but
Why is it my love
Does seem to grow ever distant?

Dewfall upon dewdrops,
Both do I
Let ever fall—
Love fills my flesh so
It could fade away!

Not waiting at all
The leaves upon the trees, so lush
In summer, have
With scarlet hues
Begun to be dyed!

For a long time now,
Yearning has filled my heart:
In the Sixth Month
The purifying deity
Seems to know it well, within the skies.

The Fifth Month’s skies
Endlessly do fill my gaze,
Doing nothing but weep
For I love her so!
