When the earlier Nijō Minister [Fujiwara no Norimichi (996-1075)] recovered after having been ill for days, he said to her, ‘Why didn’t you ask after me?’ and she composed:
死ぬ計歎にこそは嘆きしかいきてとふべき身にしあらねば
| sinu bakari nageki ni koso Fa nagekisika ikite toFubeki mi ni si araneba |
Death alone My worry for you Might have brought me in my grief; Should one ask if you’re alive- I am not such a one. |
