The Barrier of Habakari

The Barrier of Habakari (Fabakari no seki 憚関), was located in Michinoku in the north of Japan. It’s primary use in poetry, though was as a play on words, in that Fabakari, also meant ‘hesitation’.

This poem is, in fact, almost identical to a poem that Sanekata sent back to one of his friends when in Michinoku (Sanekata Shū 218), and demonstrates how a good poet could always adapt a poem for a different situation.
