Sanekata Shū 104

When a number of nobles had gone to Kawashiri, the Provisional Major Councillor called for some entertainment from ladies who were other than maidens and, when we were reciting poetry, I composed this on the topic of ‘dreamlike feelings’.

行きやらで日も暮れぬべし舟のうちにかきはなれぬる人を戀ふとて

yukiyarade
Fi mo kurenubesi
Fune no uti ni
kakiFanarenuru
Fito wo koFu tote
We can proceed no further, and
Shall, no doubt, see the sunset
From within this boat; while
Rowing ever further away,
Goes the lady of my longing…
