The Bridge at Nagara 長柄の橋 was built across the lower reaches of the River Yodo in what would now be Osaka city in the Sixth Month of 812 on the orders of Emperor Saga 嵯峨. It was washed away numerous times, but always rebuilt, and came to be used as a poetic symbol of living on after the death of a loved one, as in this case.
