Love III: 9

Left.

をのづから絶ぬ情に忘られて積もるつらさを恨みやはする

ononzukara
taenu nasake ni
wasurarete
tsumoru tsurasa o
urami ya wa suru
Perhaps
Your unending kindness
I had forgot, and
My mounting coldness
Is what I will despise?

Lord Suetsune.

Right.

今はたゞ思ひ出るぞ哀なる忘れ果つべき中の絶え間を

ima wa tada
omoi’izuru zo

naka no taema o
Now all
That I remember
Is my sadness;
You must have completely forgotten me,
So long it’s been since last we met…

Jakuren.

The Right complain that the Left’s poem ‘doesn’t say anything at all’ [nan to ka wa mōsubeki]. The Left state that the Right’s ‘That I remember is my sadness’ (omoi’izuru zo awarenaru) really is very moving [makoto ni awarege nari].

Shunzei’s judgement: The Left’s ‘unending kindness’ (taenu nasake) and the Right’s ‘I remember’ (omoi’izuru) are formally equivalent [utazama dōtō ni haberubeshi].
