Mikumano Bay

Mikumano Bay stretched from the southern tip of the Shima Penisula in the south of what is now Mie Prefecture, across to the coast in Wakayama Prefecture to the south. It was renowned for hamayuū, a plant in the iris family, and so was frequently used to evoke images of piling layer on layer (of cloth yuū) in love poetry.
