Sanekata Shū 146

When I had left a pillow at a lady’s house, and then not visited her, she returned it, saying:

置きてみるかひもあらまし忘るゝをこれだに黄楊の枕なりせば

okite miru
kaFi mo aramasi
wasururu wo
kore dani tuge no
makura nariseba
Left, that you would see me
Then might it have some use;
But that I am forgotten is
The only tale told by this boxwood
Pillow.
