Sanekata Shū 259

When I had said, ‘I want to speak with you,’ and by the time she had said, ‘Come now!’ dawn had broken, the following morning:

露はらふ人しなければ冬の夜にをきあかしつるほど知らなむ

tuyu FaraFu
Fito sinakereba
Fuyu no yo ni
woki akasituru
Fodo wo siranamu
To brush away the dewfall
I have no one, so
This winter’s night
I was awake till dawn;
I would have you know how long it was!
