Shikitsu 敷津 was the name given to the coastline to the south-west of the Sumiyoshi Shrine in the province of Settsu 摂津 (currently Suminoe 住之江 ward in Osaka city). It was used as a uta markura in poetry, primarily as it could be used as a pivot word with shiki 敷き ‘spread’. In the poem, while not being used explicitly as a kakekotoba, it evokes spreading out one’s bedding, as well as the spreading waves.
