The readings of the first two lines of this poem have defeated the best of modern scholarship to date, so what is given here is but one of a number of different theories.

There is broad consensus, however, that the poem is obliquely referring to the events surrounding the attempted revolt of  Prince Arima, its failure and his execution in the autumn of 658.
