河の瀨になびく玉藻のみがくれて人に知られぬ戀もする哉

nabiku tamamo no
migakurete
Fito ni sirarenu
koFi mo suru kana
Beneath the river shallows
Trails gemweed,
Hidden in the waters;
She does not know
The love I feel.

わが宿の菊のかきねにをく霜のきえかへりてぞ戀しかりける

wa ga yado no
kiku no kakine ni
woku simo no
kiekaFerite zo
koFisikarikeru
At my house
On chrysanthemums by the fence
The frost settles only to
Vanish and return again;
Even so is my love.

ゆふされば螢よりけにもゆれどもひかりみねばや人のつれなき

yuFu sareba
Fotaru yori ke ni
moyuredomo
Fikari mineba ya
Fito no turenaki
With the fall of evening,
The fireflies’ are as nothing beside
My burning, yet
I cast no light, so
Will my love stay chill?

よゐのまもはかなくみゆる夏蟲にまどひまされるこひもするかな

yowi no ma mo
Fakanaku miyuru
natumusi ni
madoFimasareru
koFi mo suru kana
In the evening
How sad seem
The moths in their
Disastrous confusion;
My love does as much to me and more.
