Wearing blossom

For the festival, dancers would wear cherry blossom, while an imperial messenger would wear wisteria (fuji). In the poem, Sanekata plays with words by referring to the ‘deeps’(fuchi) of the river: fuji and fuchi were written identically in old Japanese, so he combines the river with the (violet) wisteria in his friend’s hair.
