A New Year’s Day poem, composed on the Hie shrine.
sazanami ya
shiga no hamamatsu
furinikeri
ta ga yo ni hikeru
ne no hi naruran |
Where the wavelets strike
On Shiga beach the pine trees
Have grown old;
Whose reign might have seen you plucked
On a new year’s day, I wonder. |

Composed on fresh greens, when he composed a hundred poem sequence of reminiscences.
sawa ni ouru
wakana naranedo
itazura ni
toshi o tsumu ni mo
sode wa nurekeri |
Growing in the marshes
As fresh greens do, they are not, yet
With the pointless
Gathering of years
My sleeves are soaked. |

When he composed a hundred poem sequence of reminiscences, he composed this as a poem on deer.
yo no naka yo
miti koso nakere
omoFi’iru
yama no woku ni mo
sika zo naku naru |
O, the world of men!
There’s no escape, indeed,
I feel!
In the mountains’ heart
A stag calls out. |

Composed as a poem in the conception of the beginning of Love, when a hundred poem sequence was composed at the house of Fujiwara no Kanezane.

Lantern-bearing,
In the mountains’ hem, from
The dew below –
Since he entered, are his sleeves
As drenched as mine, I wonder? |

When His Majesty requested a hundred poem sequence, he composed this as an ice poem.
tuki sayuru
koFori no uFe ni
arare Furi
kokoro kudakuru
tamagaFa no sato |
The moon so bright
Upon the ice
Hail falls
Breaking my heart
In my Tama River home. |

Composed as an Autumn poem, when he presented a hundred-poem sequence.
yuFu sareba
nobe no aki kaze
mi ni simite
udura naku nari
Fukakusa no sato |
When the evening comes
The Autumn wing across the fields
Pierces my breast, and
I hear the quails crying
In this Fukakusa home. |
