The Bridge of Kumeji was a legendary stone structure famous, in fact, for not being a proper bridge at all and only going part-way, and hence was frequently used in poetry as an image for a broken or suddenly terminated relationship between a man and a woman.
The legend had it that the deity Kazuragi no kami 葛城神 (also known as Hitokotonushi no kami 一言主神) was commanded by the wizard En’nogyōja 役行者 to build a bridge linking the holy mountains of Kazuragi in Yamato and Kinbusen 金峰山 in Yoshino. The deity was embarrassed by his hideous appearance and so would only work during the hours of darkness, meaning that he was never able to finish the bridge.
