Sleeping alone
Is my sleeve
The sea?
For looking upon it, waves of tears
Break there ceaselessly.

Through all the passing years
Burns Fuji;
Far more than the mountain,
Not meeting you, the flames of passion,
Burn brightly in me.

Ever thinking of you
My day is thus
Consoled, but
At night, indeed, my tears
Never do run dry…

Endless
Depths has the love
That I conceal, so
That it will kill my flesh
Is no exaggeration.

An endless hunger is
My love for you;
In tears does
My flesh float and sink
As it grows ever thinner.

In Kashima
Does the God of Tsukuma
Constantly
Upon my flesh, alone,
Lay the burdens of love?

Vanish and to tears
Have turned, so
Her beloved face
I will see upon my sleeves.

Thoughts simply
Filled me, but
In the skies, love is
Fleeting, indeed!

On a moonlit night
As blossom it appears, so
From the bamboo
The fallen, scattered, snow—
Who would sweep it away?

That through the snow so white
I pressed on, forging,
A keepsake is
The tears upon my sleeves,
All frozen.

‘Tis not that
Tears hanging on
My sleeves have
Secretly drenched them—‘tis
Dewdrops from the roadside grasses.

I don’t think this is particularly moving; the conjecture is brief, and the greater than normal pivot is lacking in realism.
