滝のおともいかがきくらん都だにものあはれなる比にも有るかな

miyako dani
mono’aware naru
koro ni mo aru kana
The waterfall’s sound:
Do you hear it, I wonder?
Even in the capital
My heart is moved
At this time, too!

しらくもにまがふさくらのこずゑにてちとせの春をそらにしるかな

The clouds, so white
Blend with the cherry blossom

At a mountain retreat, that
The rice seedlings in the paddy ‘fore my gate
Are dimly
Brightening, I know not, for
My gaze is on the moon!

けふまでに我をおもへば菊の上の露は千年の玉にざりける

ware o omoeba

tsuyu wa chitose no
tama nizarikeru
Up until this day
Have you thought of me, so
Upon the chrysanthemums
These dewdrops, thousand year
Jewels do not seem to be.

Composed on seeing scattered cherry blossoms floating on the stream at his house.

ここにこぬ人もみよとてさくらばな水の心にまかせてぞやる

Fito mo miyo tote
sakurabana
midu no kokoro ni
makasete zo yaru
To folk who fail to come
Here, I’d say, ‘Behold!’
O, cherry blossoms,
The water’s heart
I’ll trust, to send you on your way.
